[ A Board game Cafe and social enterprise]

Our Story

Hywel and Ruth are the brains behind Cakes and Ladders. They met at University and bonded over classic board games like Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. They maintained their love for board games while pursuing other careers - Hywel in the mental health sector and Ruth managing art galleries.

Inspired by their passion for board gaming culture and the ability of games to bring people together, Ruth and Hywel began working on their dream for their own community board game cafe and social enterprise in 2015. They recognised the growing demand for more community spaces in North London and began to attend local street markets and run pop up board game sessions in local cafe's and bars.

Early in 2018 Hywel and Ruth decided to leave their jobs to focus entirely on finding the right premises for the cafe. They soon met Alex from Earth Ale, who was relocating his microbrewery to Wood Green, and about to open a taproom on a double decker bus in Blue House Yard, Wood Green.  Looking for a cafe to run on the bus during the daytime and surprisingly happy to house the ever-increasing board game collection, Ruth and Hywel decided to come on-board... Excuse the pun!

Our Social Purpose

Cakes and Ladders aim to reduce social isolation and improve health and wellbeing for the residents of Haringey through board games. We are working with local mental health service providers to facilitate a locally rooted board games for wellbeing programme. We will also be looking to partner with volunteer programmes through Spice Time Credits and local schools for wellbeing sessions for children.

Our Ethos

We believe in good quality local food and drink and use local farms and organisations for as much of our products as possible. These include Celtic Bakery, Wildes Cheese, Cannon and Cannon, Square Root, Ozone Coffee, the Kettle Shed and many more to come!

Our Games

Below is a list of our games - you can use the Find in Page function of your browser to search the list more easily. Alternatively, take a look at our BoardGameGeek profile - CakesAndLaddersLDN.

Not all of our inventory is stocked on the bus, but we can arrange for a particular game to be in-house if requested.

Dungeons and Dragons RPG - Coming February!

We are excited to announce that due to the success of our first introduction to Dungeons and Dragons, we will now be setting up a regular weekly Dungeons and Dragons meetup on the bus!

Starting February 19th 2019, 6:30-9:30pm, the meetup will then continue every Tuesday evening at the same time.

What is Dungeons and Dragons?
Dungeons & Dragons is a role playing game that has exploded in popularity in recent years and with the game  entering it's 5th edition of the rules it's never been more  friendly to new players. Take on the role of a mighty warrior or powerful wizard wielding sword and sorcery to save the land from evil.

At this weekly D&D group event you can learn  the rules, get a feel for the game, and play a short adventure with a few fellow heroes. If it is your first time, we hope it will be the perfect introduction to the worldwide phenomenon that is Dungeons & Dragons, and gives you the chance to continue every week if you enjoy it! If you are already experienced with Dungeons and Dragons, we hope to establish this as a regular group meetup for you to enjoy!

Can Children Attend?
Yes - we are aiming to have children in a separate group from adults, but if you would like to play in the same group as your children we can accommodate that. We ask that minimum age is 10 years old (if your child has played before and is younger exceptions may be made). Please let us know if you will be bringing children and their age/s or if your child will be supervised by an adult. Please email info@cakesandladders.co.uk

Do I Have to Attend Every Week?
You are welcome to come as a one off or just on occasions when you can make the Tuesday evening event, however we would recommend attending every week to get fully immersed into the Dungeons and Dragons world!

How Do I Get a Ticket?
Tickets are £5.  Buy here! on Eventbrite,  or email us at info@cakesandladders.co.uk to book a space and pay at the door on the day.  We would recommend booking a space as there are only limited spaces.
